Library / Since its opening in 1940, this unique and historic building has been a cornerstone of downtown Toledo. It has also been a monument to the foresight of its planners, adjusting to the countless changes in the community's needs right up to the rapid development of electronic resources. Main Library offers more than a nationally respected collection. It is considered an architectural jewel throughout Ohio, presenting the best local example of Art Deco or modernistic style on a massive scale. |

In 1931, Toledo, Ohio became the first city in the United States to establish a Sister City tie with a city in another nation—Toledo, Spain. However, it wasn’t until 1956 that the sister cities movement began in earnest across the country, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the People to People program. The goal of this program was to involve both individuals and groups at all levels of society in citizen diplomacy to promote global understanding and lessen the chances of future conflict. Due to the tremendous popularity and growth of this concept, Sister Cities International (SCI) was created in 1967 to coordinate and support the growing network of sister city organizations around the country. |

Lagrange Street: Polish International Village Polish International Village is characterized by churches, schools, club rooms, groceries, meat markets, hardware stores, and apparel shops, to name just a few. The business district also has a tremendous asset in the Ohio Theatre, one of Toledo’s last remaining historic theaters still in operation. Many residents have lived in this community all their lives. The neighborhood is a place where people care about their homes and where craft workers have turned plain interiors into works of art. The people also care about their heritage, and many of the businesses help keep that spirit alive. The heart of the business district is Lagrange Street - or Lagrinka to many - the center of Toledo’s largest concentration of people of Polish ancestry for over 130 years. |
