Water - Dams |
|

Hoover Dam (1931-36) |
History: Before the construction of the dam, the Colorado
River Basin periodically overflowed its banks when snow from the
Rocky Mountains melted and drained into the river. These floods
endangered downstream farming communities. In addition to
essential flood control, a dam would make possible the expansion
of irrigated farming in the parched region. It would also
provide a dependable supply of water for Los Angeles and other
Southern California communities.

Betsy Byars: The Glory Girl |
|

Betsy Byars lives in South Carolina on an airstrip.
Both she and her husband are pilots. |
How old are you?
I was born in the same year as bubble gum and Mickey
Mouse, 1928, a very good year for all three of us.
Where do
you get your ideas?
Since my books are mostly realistic fiction, I get my ideas from the
things that happen to me, to my kids, to my dogs and cats, to my
friends dogs and cats, and from things I see on TV and read about in
the newspaper. I sometimes think my books are like scrapbooks or my
life because almost every incident brings back a memory.
Where do you write?
When I started writing, I was living in a very small apartment with
my husband and two little daughters. I write on the kitchen table.
I'd keep my typewriter beside my place, and I'd push it aside to eat
and then pull it back in front of me. Now I have a studio and a
computer, but anyone who really wants to write will find a place.

Some

getting into trouble. |
 |

13 years, but when he was released he rescued the Glory family
from the river after a car accident.
|
Main idea
This book is about the Glory
family. They are famous. They find out that their uncle is getting
out of jail after 13 years.
One night they got into a car
accident because an angry driver was trying to get revenge. The
Glory's car rolled all the way down a creek where their Uncle saved
them.
Moral
 |
I learned that revenge and
jealousy can hurt people very badly. I also learned that a
family's love can help us in times of need. |

I propose that the following character sequence [be used]
for joke markers: :-)
Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical
to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends.
For this, use :-( |
