Beschreibung: This
lecture is addressed to all students and is meant to
introduce you to those areas of English language description
that have to do with words and other lexical units (there are
lexical units which are larger than a word, such as the complex
preposition in front of, the idiom spill the beans,
or the phrasal verb put up with).
After briefly
looking at English vocabulary in general (problems resulting
from its sheer size, etymological heterogeneity and lack of
transparency), we will be concerned with the manifold problems
of how English has acquired and continues to acquire new words
(borrowing, word formation, etc.), leading on to one of the
trickiest problems in linguistics, the description of word
meaning. The lecture will also give occasion to introduce
students to different linguistic theories and provide examples
of linguistic argumentation. |

Assignments |
| Before the event: Prepare one question
each for the Meyer lecture (hoping to be given the chance to ask
them), e.g. : At a time where there are different sets of
English lexica (as provided by Microsoft), which is the one we
should take as the paradigm as learners of English as a second
language (ESL)? as well as a question that Caroline [NN] might
be asked, such as: What linguistic aspects do you focus on in
teaching German students the English language? After the
event: Pair work - describe your experiences and post them
in the respective forum. |
